Pompidou II is an interior biophilic installation that integrates MEW-printed scaffolds, plant systems, and architectural lighting into the main staircase of Lawrence Hall. The project explores how living systems can be embedded into indoor environments by combining melt electrowriting micro-structures, plant analysis, and sustainable water flow strategies. Inspired by the Centre Pompidou’s exposed structural logic, the design creates a visible, nature-driven framework that introduces comfort, wellness, and ecological presence into a high-traffic public space.
The exploded axonometric shows how the wall, waterproofing, brackets, planting pipes, irrigation, drainage, and collection gutter form one coordinated system.
The main staircase was selected for its visibility, circulation, and access to natural light within Lawrence Hall.
A relative daylight study identifies high-, medium-, and low-exposure zones to guide the placement of the planting system.
The pointed form of spiral aloe leaves inspired an L-shaped scaffold module that is rotated and repeated throughout the system. Silver pothos was selected for its trailing growth, low-light tolerance, and low maintenance needs.
Physical and digital studies of Melt Electrowriting explored how lightweight scaffold structures could support plant growth within architectural spaces.
The floor plan locates the intervention along the staircase wall while maintaining clear circulation through the existing building.
The scaffold elevation shows the vertical arrangement, rotation, and repetition of the planting modules across the wall.
The irrigation diagram traces how water is distributed through the planting modules and collected through the drainage system below.
Plant density and placement respond to the varying daylight conditions measured across the installation.
The wall section explains how the planting system is anchored to the existing concrete wall while controlling moisture, ventilation, irrigation, and drainage.
The enlarged module detail shows the plant opening, liner, growing medium, root zone, drip emitter, and drainage outlet within one planting pipe.
